What Is Rhinoplasty?
Also referred to as a “nose job,” rhinoplasty is a facial plastic surgery that alters the bone, cartilage, and skin of the nose to reshape the nostrils. It is performed for two reasons: cosmetic and function. Many patients find that they are self-conscious about the appearance, size, or shape of their nose. However, there are several medical reasons why a rhinoplasty may be necessary.
Rhinoplasty is considered a highly customizable treatment that can be conducted with your unique goals in mind. Dr. Carson Huynh, our skilled facial plastic surgeon, is well known for his talent and keen artistic eye. Dr. Huynh will focus on your goals and use them to build a treatment tailored specifically for you. A good rhinoplasty won’t make your nose stand out in unnatural ways, but instead, it should complement your other facial features.
Types of Rhinoplasty Surgeries
There are many different types of rhinoplasty surgeries and each one has its own technique, but all rhinoplasty surgeries fall under two main surgical techniques, either open or closed. Closed rhinoplasty uses hidden incisions inside the nostrils. This technique is commonly used when only minor changes need to be made to the nose, such as a small hump.
Open rhinoplasty is used for more complex noses or revision cases because better access is often required. An open technique allows the surgeon to make more significant changes, such as removing a large bump, correcting a crooked nose, or enhancing the nose tip. When properly designed, closed, and with good after care, the columella incision of an open technique can heal without any visible scarring.
A primary rhinoplasty refers to the first surgery a nose has ever had, meaning the nose has been completely untouched until this point. It’s imperative to choose a rhinoplasty surgeon who knows the surgery inside and out to receive the most natural-looking results.
Sometimes, a secondary or revision rhinoplasty is required to fix any residual cosmetic or functional issue from a past rhinoplasty procedure, which is the case for around 5% to 20% of rhinoplasty cases. Revision rhinoplasty can be more complicated than a primary rhinoplasty due to scar tissue and lack of remaining tissue inside the nose viable for reconstruction. In some cases, the nose will have to be rebuilt using tissue grafts from the patient’s nasal septum, ear cartilage, or rib cartilage to achieve the desired results.
Preservation rhinoplasty involves less removal or disruption of the underlying bone and cartilage structure to preserve more of the natural nose appearance and support. This approach is gaining in popularity because it helps to reduce chances of unwanted side effects, such as saddle nose or nasal valve collapse due to over-resection. Dr. Huynh will perform a thorough examination of your nose during your consultation to help determine if this technique is right for you.
Ethnic rhinoplasty includes African American rhinoplasty, Hispanic Rhinoplasty, and Asian Rhinoplasty. Each ethnicity has distinct characteristics that require their own individual approach to surgery. African American and Hispanic noses are often broader, flatter noses, making refining the nasal tip more of a challenge. Asian noses typically have a low bridge, weak bulbous tip, and wide flaring nostrils. Dr. Huynh uses his experience with various tissue grafts and implant materials to help meet your cultural beauty standards or your own unique goals.
Alarplasty
If a patient is concerned or self-conscious about the width or shape of their nostrils and wishes to enhance their facial symmetry, then there’s a special variety of rhinoplasty available: alarplasty, or nostril reduction surgery.
Alarplasty, also known as alar base reduction, is a surgical procedure that modifies the width of the nostrils at the base of the nose. The goal of alarplasty is to achieve a more balanced and harmonious appearance by adjusting the size or shape of the nostrils. This reduction is achieved by removing a small piece of nasal tissue at the alar base where the nostril and cheek are connected. Alarplasty is most often done as part of a more comprehensive rhinoplasty surgery. In patients who do not require changes to the nose tip or bridge, an alarplasty may be performed under local anesthesia or along with moderate IV sedation for a maximal relaxed experience.
The primary benefit of alarplasty is the enhancement of facial symmetry and aesthetic appeal. The procedure carries minimal scarring, and by reducing the width of the nostrils, it can help to create a more balanced look to the face.

Best Candidates for a Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty offers many benefits to patients looking to enhance their facial appearance. This procedure can be performed at any age; however, it is suggested that children and teens wait to undergo their rhinoplasty procedure until they are finished growing as the nose can change shape and size during puberty and into adulthood. Good candidates for rhinoplasty may also have one or more of the following nasal issues:
- Disproportionate nose
- Deviated septum
- Enlarged nasal tip
- Overly flared nostrils
- Crooked, broken, or off-centered nasal bridge
What Are the Benefits of a Rhinoplasty in Atlanta, Georgia?
There are not many surgical procedures that can fix both the form and function of a certain body part, but a rhinoplasty is among that very small list. Many patients are surprised to learn about the health and aesthetic benefits that a rhinoplasty has to offer, including:
- Size
- Symmetry
- Reduction of oversize or misshapen nostrils
- Bulbous nasal tips
- Droopy, upturned, or slanted nasal tips
- Nostril position
- Humps or dips on the bridge
- Straightness
The most common physical health benefit that patients report after their rhinoplasty is improved sleep quality due to a reduction in snoring, sleep apnea, and improved breathing and airway efficiency. Restructuring the nose with rhinoplasty may also reduce the severity and occurrence of certain types of sinus issues. Alterations to the spaces in your nasal passages can help reduce pressure and change areas where bacteria gather and cause sinus infections.

Rhinoplasty FAQS
Rhinoplasty is most commonly performed under general anesthesia. General anesthesia with endotracheal intubation provides the best protection for the airway. Minor correction such as alarplasty or small dorsal hump reduction may be with local anesthesia with moderate conscious IV sedation.
Minor bruising and discomfort is to be expected immediately after rhinoplasty surgery. You will be prescribed a pain reliever and antibiotics. Minor bleeding is also common during the first 24 hours.
You can prepare for your rhinoplasty consultation by asking yourself, if I can make any changes to my nose, how would I want my nose tip, bridge, and nostril base to look. You should also note down specific questions.
On your rhinoplasty surgery day, try to relax and stay positive. Be sure to pick up your meds before the day of your surgery. Avoid taking any over the counter medications that may increase your risk of bleeding and bruising.
Like other facial surgery, recovery time for rhinoplasty is a process that progresses over time. Your sutures and dressing will be removed after the first week. Most of the swelling is down after 2 weeks and most patients can start to appreciate the look of their new nose after 2 weeks. However, it may take up to a full year or longer for final results of the nose to be seen, especially in the nose tip.
Depending on the physical requirement of your work, most rhinoplasty patients can return to desk work after several days. You should refrain from strenuous work activity and exercise for at least one week. Your doctor can advise you further as you make progress with your recovery.
You can resume light exercises such as walking after several days. Strenuous workout such as weight lifting and aerobics can typically be resumed after 2 weeks.
It is important to communicate clearly with your surgeon of your requests with your rhinoplasty. Everyone’s nose is unique just like everyone’s face is unique. Dr. Huynh is known for creating natural looking rhinoplasty results that are unique for each patient’s request.
If you experience breathing difficulty from having a deviated nasal septum or internal valve collapse inside the nose, a rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty can also help improve the function of your nose to help you breathe better.
Your rhinoplasty surgery can examine the structures inside your nose and perform breathing tests to help determine if you would need a septoplasty. In many cases, a septoplasty is performed as a part of a rhinoplasty procedure in order to obtain the septal cartilage structure to be used as structural grafts to improve the function and appearance of the nose.
An Open Rhinoplasty approach utilizes a small skin incision across the columella portion of the nose under the tip in order to open access to the underlying bone and cartilage structures. This approach allows the surgeon to make more complex changes to reshape to the nose tip to improve breathing function. Simple changes such as reducing a small bump on the nose bridge can be accessed through an incision on the inside rim of the nose without the columella skin incision. This is referred to as Closed Rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty can benefit patients of all ages, young and old alike. Many patients seeking rhinoplasty are in their 20’s to 40’s. The younger you are, the quicker your healing will be. Minors under the age of 18 require written consent from their parents prior to having surgery.
Fortunately, packing of the nose is no longer required for most patients after having rhinoplasty. For patients who have had work done with the nasal septum, a soft plastic splint with an opening for air flow is inserted to help with healing. The splint is much more comfortable than having the nose packed shut.
Revision Rhinoplasty is often more complex and challenging than primary rhinoplasty. Scar tissue and lack of remaining tissue in the nose to make surgical modifications which may require that surgeon to use additional tissue from other parts of the body can add significant complexity and time to a revision rhinoplasty operation.
Rhinoplasty can improve your sense of self confidence with the look of your new nose. It can also help improve the function of your nose to help you breathe better and bring better balance to your facial features.
Computer imaging can be a helpful tool to assist in communication of treatment goals between the patient and the rhinoplasty surgeon. You should not rely on simulation imaging to be a guarantee of outcome as there are inherent limitations of this technology. Final results can vary depending on a variety of factors such as how the body heals.
Rhinoplasty may be covered by some medical insurance under certain conditions such as reconstruction after a traumatic injury or functional in nature to correct breathing disorders that have failed medical therapy.
Most rhinoplasty procedures are performed in office based surgery centers as an outpatient day procedure. You can be discharged home once you’ve recovered from anesthesia to rest at home. At Radiance, we’re fully equipped to provide anesthesia for your rhinoplasty procedure in a comfortable, safe, and private setting.
Although smoking is not an absolute contraindication for rhinoplasty, it is recommended that you stop smoking for at least two weeks to help maximize your healing and reduce your health risks.
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is most commonly performed under general anesthesia where you are fully asleep for maximal comfort. Medications are prescribed to help manage any discomfort you may have after the procedure. Most patients report a sense of stuffiness rather than pain after rhinoplasty.
Immediate risk of a rhinoplasty procedure includes excessive bleeding. Long term risks may include asymmetry, unfavorable scarring or aesthetic outcome which may require additional revision surgery to correct.
