Septoplasty in Atlanta, GA
The nasal septum is the vertical wall that separates the nose into two nasal cavities, and when it becomes deviated, one nostril will appear larger than the other. The septum consists of cartilage on the anterior part and bone on the posterior part, covered by a layer of tissue called mucosa. When deviation of the nasal septum happens due to injuries or other causes, it can cause the nose to look crooked and even cause trouble breathing. Septoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that straightens out a deviated nasal septum. The purpose of this procedure is to centralize the nasal septum, both for aesthetic purposes and clinical reasons as a deviated septum can cause major nasal obstructions, infections of the sinuses, headaches, and snoring or sleep apnea.

Septoplasty Overview
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that straightens out the bone and cartilage dividing the space between the nostrils. When the septum becomes crooked, it’s known as a deviated septum. A deviated septum can make it harder to breathe through your nose and can increase the risk of sinus infections due to poor drainage. During a septoplasty procedure, the nasal septum is repositioned to the middle of the nose. Dr. Huynh will cut and remove parts of your nasal septum before reinserting them into the proper position. Once the septoplasty is fully healed, you’ll likely be able to breathe more freely, and your nose will look straighter.
Why Is a Septoplasty Performed?
A crooked septum is actually a very common feature for many people. For some, it doesn’t cause any discomfort or issues, but for others, it can be a nuisance and disrupt their life. When it’s severe, a deviated septum can cause blockage of one side of the nose and reduce airflow, causing difficulty breathing through one or both sides of the nose.
A septoplasty procedure straightens the nasal septum by a plastic surgeon straightening the nasal septum through careful trimming, repositioning, and replacing of the cartilage, bone, or both.
Why Choose Dr. Huynh as Your Septoplasty Surgeon?
In order to perform a septoplasty procedure, a plastic surgeon needs to have a deep understanding of the complex working of the nose. The nose, while made up of cartilage and bone, is very delicate and intricate. To achieve the ideal aesthetic and fix issues involving something as essential as breathing, it’s important to have a surgeon who is well trained and experienced in the art of septoplasty and rhinoplasty.

What to Expect from Septoplasty Recovery
Our team will provide you with post-operative recovery instructions customized to your unique procedure. In the hours following surgery, most patients feel drowsy from anesthesia and experience some discomfort from the surgery, but Dr. Huynh can absolutely help you feel as comfortable as possible with pain medication. It is likely that both nostrils will be packed to help control the bleeding. The packing will be removed before you are sent home from the surgical center to ensure that all bleeding is under control.
In some cases, Dr. Huynh may need to place a splint in the nose. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to have the splint removed after about a week.
The full recovery of a septoplasty can take anywhere from four to six weeks. Most patients can return to work after about a week, though bruising and swelling may still be present until the third or fourth week of recovery. It’s recommended to limit physical activity for the first week as strenuous activity can cause bleeding in the nose or accidental injury. Make sure to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully to ensure that you have full and smooth septoplasty recovery.
Septoplasty surgery is a functional and reconstructive procedure which may be covered by your medical insurance.
What to Expect from Your Septoplasty Surgery
Just like before a rhinoplasty, your surgeon Dr. Huynh will meet with you before the surgery and conduct a thorough consultation. This gives him the chance to examine your nose, listen to your issues and concerns, and discuss treatment options as well as expected outcomes of your procedure.
Septoplasty is generally performed under general anesthesia, but this largely depends on the patient’s health and the severity of their condition. The entire operation typically requires about an hour, and for most patients, they can return home the same day.
During a septoplasty, Dr. Huynh will make an incision in the nose that will allow him to trim, reposition, and correct the bones and cartilage of the nose. In certain cases, a cartilage graft may be necessary to correct the deviation. Since the incision is inside the nose, there is no need to worry about scarring.
Following the correction of the septum, the incision is sutured, and the patient is sent to recovery.
