Discover: Facial Feminization Surgery in Atlanta, GA

Many transgender women experience a great deal of anxiety and struggle with acceptance in their personal and professional communities because their characteristics don’t match their personal identity, a condition called gender dysphoria. Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS), also known as Facial Gender Affirmation Surgery or Gender Confirmation Surgery, is gaining in popularity for its ability to transform faces with strong, masculine features into those with more feminine characteristics. It’s a highly specialized procedure composed of multiple different treatments to completely transform the face. Facial Feminizing Surgery can not only help trans women embrace who they are but allows them to openly express and build confidence in their true gender identity.

FFS isn’t only for transgender women because it enhances facial beauty. These procedures are becoming more desirable among non-transgender women as well. Masculine features can make it difficult for any woman to feel confident and desirable, which is why FFS helps women of all backgrounds to look more feminine and feel more radiant.

A large or long forehead is generally a male characteristic rather than that of a female. Male foreheads often have a heavy bony ridge just above the eyes in a line beneath the eyebrows. Forehead contouring, also known as forehead bossing surgery, is an FFS procedure that involves shaving down or surgically altering the brow bone. It can also involve an implant or dermal filler to round out a flat forehead, creating a more feminine appearance. Dr. Huynh often performs forehead contouring with a brow lift and hairline lowering  as this typically produces better, more cohesive results, and all three procedures can be performed using the same surgical approach.

More often, females have fuller, more rounded cheeks. cheek implants or dermal fillers can be used to give the cheeks a more desirable, fuller appearance implants are offered in a variety of different shapes and sizes and can be placed over or under the cheekbone or closer to the nose. A square or boxy chin can be reshaped to a more round or tapered shape for a softer appearance with a small chin implant.  Dermal fillers can also be used to create temporary chin or cheek augmentation. Using hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, the chin and cheeks can be augmented to your desired look without incisions or downtime, but the results will touch-up appointments.

A brow lift refers to a surgical procedure that reshapes and repositions the eyebrows higher, resulting in a more feminine appearance. This is considered one of the most effective and sought-after procedures to feminize and rejuvenate the upper face.

In males, the hairline tends to be higher on the face and defines the forehead with a boxy shape; in females, the hairline tends to be lower on the face and defines the forehead with a semicircular shape. During a hairline lowering procedure, an incision is made along the hairline where a section of skin can be removed from the forehead, and the scalp is lowered to a new, more feminine position.

The male nose tends to be longer and wider, consistent with its overall larger appearance. A female nose is often narrower, shorter, tilted upwards, and slightly concave. During a feminizing rhinoplasty, Dr. Huynh will alter the shape of the nose by changing the underlying bone and cartilage. Lateral and medial tissue may be removed from inside the nose to make it narrower. Any bumps or a deviated septum can be addressed if so desired. Also, the tip of the nose may be redefined, raised, and reduced.

The male jaw is often wider and larger, and the angle of the mandible typically forms a right angle. A female jawline is generally curved more gently and approaches a straighter line. During jawline contouring, the jawbone is cut or filed down to achieve a more feminine contour.

To create fuller, more feminine-looking lips, an incision is made under the nose, and part of the skin is removed. The remaining skin is sutured to the base of the nose, pulling the top lip up to shorten the distance between the top lip and nose. Lips can also be made to look fuller with a lip augmentation, using lip fillers or natural, synthetic, or solid injected implants.

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the effects of aging in the facial and neck areas. The procedure is used to tighten sagging skin, reduce wrinkles and lines, eliminate jowls and excess fat, and can also create a more feminine facial contour. At Radiance Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine, Dr. Huynh offers both a deep plane facelift technique and a mini lift option, depending on each patient’s individual needs.

Males have a more prominent thyroid cartilage. In a chondrolaryngoplasty or tracheal shave, the thyroid cartilage, or Adam’s Apple, is shaved down to create a more feminine throat and neckline.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, removes excess fat that can appear above or below the eyelids. A blepharoplasty with canthoplasty focuses on lifting the external corner of the eyelid to a height that allows your plastic surgeon to create a more almond shape that appears much more feminine.
