Facelift in Atlanta, GA with Dr. Carson Huynh
Collagen and elastin are two of the most vital structural proteins in the human body. They are responsible for keeping the skin youthful, tight, and radiant.
When you’re younger, your body produces an abundance of both, but as you age and the longer your skin is exposed to environmental and physical damages, these essential proteins begin to break down at an alarming rate and production cannot keep up. This dramatic reduction is the main cause for an aged appearance of wrinkles and loose, sagging skin.
To address skin laxity that has caused loose skin and jowls to appear around the cheeks and chin, Dr. C. Carson Huynh is proud to offer his patients the deep-plane facelift technique Multiplanar Multivector Facelift or a mini facelift option, depending on each patient’s individual needs. This highly customizable procedure is essential for addressing aesthetic concerns in the lower two-thirds of the face—an area that isn’t known for responding to non-surgical treatments. During your consultation, you’ll discuss the different components of a deep plane or mini facelift, what to expect, and how Dr. Huynh can tailor this treatment to meet your individual needs and aesthetic goals.

What Is a Facelift?
Also known as a rhytidectomy, a facelift is a procedure used to reposition the supportive facial tissue layer called SMAS, facial muscles, and remove loose skin to diminish common signs of aging, including:
- Jowls
- Sunken areas of the face that are lacking subcutaneous fat
- Skin folds around the nose and corners of the mouth
- Sagging cheeks
- Loose facial skin
- Prominent hollows beneath the eyes
An Atlanta facelift with Dr. Huynh can remove up to a decade from a patient’s appearance. During a facelift consultation with Dr. Huynh, he will first ensure that you’re a good candidate for surgery and may discuss partnering procedure options that can help you achieve the full benefits that a facelift has to offer. Many patients also ask about a neck lift, forehead and brow lift or an eyelid lift to address issues on the upper third of the face for full facial rejuvenation.
How Does Dr. Huynh Perform a Facelift Surgery?
Dr. Huynh performs Atlanta facelifts as an outpatient procedure using intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The facelift incisions are hidden inside the hairline at the temple, in front of the ear, then around the earlobe and behind the ear, ending at the scalp area. If a neck lift procedure is included, a small separate incision will also be placed in a non-visible area beneath the chin for the neck lift procedure.
Any sagging or loose muscles and connective tissues called SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) will be repositioned to their natural youthful position. Any excess skin and tissue will be carefully removed. In some cases, fat deposits will also be removed from beneath the chin and neck. When using the deep-plane technique, underlying connective tissue layers are repositioned, avoiding the unnatural, wind-tunnel look that can sometimes be associated with conventional facelift results.
Lastly, incisions are closed using fine sutures to help reduce scarring. Once the healing process is complete, which typically takes about six months, the incisions will be hardly noticeable.

However, many people are now realizing the many benefits of having a facelift sooner than later. Younger patients who are not yet showing heavy jowling in the lower face may opt for a brow lift or a mini facelift over a full facelift procedure. It’s important that all patients be in good physical and mental health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the results following their procedure.
What to Expect from a Facelift Recovery
Once your facelift procedure is complete, Dr. Huynh, or an assisting nurse, will wrap your incisions in bandages which will be removed in the next few days.
One week after your procedure, you’ll return for a follow-up appointment to have your stitches or surgical clips removed. Swelling, numbness, and bruising are all common side effects of the procedure and should resolve on their own after three to six weeks.
It’s important that patients follow all Dr. Huynh’s instructions for cleaning and protecting their incision sites to minimize scarring. Once all the incisions have completely healed, ways to keep your scars from ever becoming noticeable is to always apply a sun protectant to your face before leaving the house and reapply throughout the day.
Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for at least two weeks or until Dr. Huynh authorizes you to do so. Anti-inflammatory and pain medications can be prescribed to alleviate any discomfort during the first several days, but many patients report little to no pain after their procedure.

Facelift FAQS
The typical age of a facelift patient has been trending lower and lower in recent years to mid 40’s as more patients are realizing the benefits of having the procedure sooner rather than later.
The SMAS name in a facelift is an abbreviation for the Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System, which is a layer of tissue under the skin. During a facelift, the SMAS tissue is carefully dissected from its attachment to the underlying tissue and repositioned in a higher position to create a more youthful appearance. This technique of facelifting gives more natural and longer lasting results than superficial facelifting technique where little to no dissection is done to reposition the SMAS.
A traditional deep plane facelift is the gold standard for correction of tissue laxity along the cheeks and jawline. The deep plane facelift technique gives more superior and long lasting results compared to a mini facelift. A mini facelift is typically lower in cost but your results will not last as long and will typically require another treatment after several years.
You can prepare for your facelift consultation by asking yourself what are your realistic expectations and discuss this openly with your cosmetic surgeon. If your spouse will be involved in your financial decision or supporting you with your postoperative care, it is important for him/her to be present during your consultation as well.
A facelift can take as little as 1-2 hours or as long as 4-6 hours, depending on the technique and whether additional procedures are to be done at the same time, such as brow, eyelid, or neck lift. During your consultation, your facelift surgeon can provide more detailed treatment plan that can meet your specific needs.
Prior to your facelift surgery day, be sure to review your preoperative instructions provided during the pre op visit. Avoid taking any medications that could increase your risk of bleeding/bruising. Maintain a healthy balanced diet to optimize your healing and recovery. You should also pick up prescribed medications ahead of your surgery day. Those with a prior history of nausea sensitivity should apply the anti nausea medication patch the evening before surgery.
Recovery after a facelift procedure is a gradual process with a social downtime of 7 to 10 days. The vast majority of swelling and bruising resolved after the first week. Sutures are typically removed after 5-7 days and makeup can be applied to camouflage residual bruising during the second week. Minor residual swelling may remain for several weeks and you will look your best after 2 months out.
Although results can vary, the benefits of facelift should last many years and in some cases forever. A facelift can help turn back the clock by 5-10 years, but it can’t stop the clock. It’s important to take care of your skin and face after a facelift to enjoy the benefits for many years to come.
A well done deep plane facelift will have natural long lasting results for many years. For best results, minor adjunctive treatments such as dermal fillers and skin resurfacing with chemical peels, microneedling combined with sun protection are recommended.
After your facelift, light exercise such as walking is encouraged as soon as you feel comfortable to do so. You should refrain from more strenuous exercise such as running or aerobics for at least 2 weeks. Your doctor will advise you for more specific activities along the way as you make progress with your recovery.
Recovery time after facelift surgery can vary, most patients can return to social settings after 7-10 days. Swelling and bruising are to be expected during the first week. You may wear makeup to camouflage residual bruising after the first week.
Most patients have a social downtime of 7 to 10 days after having a facelift. You can return to office and desk work after 2 to 3 days.
Results from a well done facelift should be natural, youthful, and long lasting. Once incisions are well healed, no one should be able to tell that you’ve had a facelift from across the dinner table.
Facelift surgery is considered the gold standard in facial rejuvenation which can give natural, long lasting results. Nonsurgical treatment alternatives such as dermal fillers and PDO threads can also provide less dramatic and shorter lasting results.
A liquid facelift refers to injection of dermal fillers in order to sculpt and lift facial structures such as the cheeks. Results of liquid facelift can be further enhanced when combined with treatment using PDO threads to lift the facial skin more effectively without open incisions of a traditional facelift.
Although facelift is generally very safe in healthy patients, there are potential risks you should know about and to discuss with your doctor. Excess bleeding can increase your risk for a hematoma which is a collection of blood under the skin which may require evacuation. Although rare, nerve injury and infection are other potential risks of the procedure.
Although facelift can be done on smokers, they have a higher risk for potential healing complications. Your surgeon may choose to limit the amount of skin elevation if you’re a smoker to lower your risk of poor skin healing. This can reduce the effectiveness of the facelift procedure.
