Many women aren’t born with the soft, gently curved jawline. Thanks to the wonderful genetics passed down from parents and grandparents, some women inherit a strong jawline and are left feeling self-conscious about their more masculine facial structure. V-Line jaw contouring is the perfect solution for those who suffer from a heavy or square jawline, as well as those who want to soften their features. It can be tailored to your appearance and individual characteristics to help create facial harmony with feminizing, naturally attractive results.

Dr. C. Carson Huynh is nationally recognized for his experience and expertise as a facial plastic surgeon. As an immigrant from an impoverished country, he developed a desire to help people at a very young age and pursued that passion once he arrived in America with his father. In his 20 years of experience, he has developed techniques for facial contouring procedures like rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, and V-line jawline surgery to help meet his patients’ individual and unique needs.

What Is V-Line Jawline Surgery?

V-line jawline surgery, also known as mandibleplasty, is a technique used in facial contouring surgery to narrow the lower portion of the face to create a softer, more feminine jawline. V-line mandibuloplasty addresses three important aspects of the lower face: the jaw angles, the body of the mandible, and the chin. With V-line mandibuloplasty, you can preserve that natural curvature of your face while also attaining a slimmer, more elegant profile.

What Can V-Line Mandibuloplasty Address?

You might consider a V-line mandibuloplasty if you are unhappy or self-conscious about how masculine your jawline and facial structure appear. Not only can a V-line jaw contouring procedure create a softer, more feminine jawline, but it can also address these other common jawline issues:

A V-line mandibuloplasty brings the jawline forward and gently rounds the area, which can have a positive effect on the appearance of double chin for some patients. If a double chin is an added area of concern for you, discuss it with Dr. Huynh to determine if a V-line mandibuloplasty can solve the issue alone or if a secondary procedure is necessary.

During a mandibuloplasty, the bone along the jaw is shaved away, correcting the appearance of an exaggerated U-shape that some patients are born with.

A square jaw is often seen as a masculine characteristic. While it isn’t an unattractive characteristic, it adds a hardness to the face and can detract from feminine elegance. V-line jawline surgery will sculpt and contour the bones of the jaw to create a softer facial structure.

Some V-line contouring patients in Atlanta also request the removal of excess fat in their cheeks. Dr. Huynh also performs buccal fat removal to reduce the excess fat tissue, which aids in the total transformation of your features.

What to Expect from Your V-Line Jaw Surgery?

When undergoing a V-Line Mandibuloplasty at Radiance Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine with Dr. Huynh at his accredited surgical facility, general anesthesia will be administered so that you can rest during the duration of your procedure.

A V-line jaw contouring procedure begins with Dr. Huynh making incremental reductions to the angles of your jaw. Next, he carefully reduces the sides of your mandible body to give your lower jaw a softer, more oval shape. Lastly, Dr. Huynh will enhance your chin by either reduction or augmentation, depending on your aesthetic goals.

What to Expect from V-Line Mandibuloplasty Recovery?

Once your surgery is complete and you’ve woken up from anesthesia, some pain and discomfort is to be expected, especially when you open your jaw or eat following surgery. You may be limited to a liquid diet for a few days to weeks. Bruising, swelling, and inflammation after surgery is completely normal, and ice packs can help. You may experience some headache, nausea, and lightheadedness, so it’s very important that you rest for the next 24 to 48 hours after your procedure.

Most patients return to their normal activities after 2 to 3 weeks. Many patients can return to work after just a few days, but only if approved by Dr. Huynh. After 2 weeks, you’ll return to Dr. Huynh to have your stitches removed. Aftercare instruction vary from patient to patient, but may include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Medications
  • In-clinic cleanings and dressings
  • Multiple check-ups

After the first 2 weeks, a large percentage of the swelling should have resolved, and you’ll notice the full results of your procedure. Dr. Huynh will continue to monitor you and answer any questions or concerns that may come up throughout the duration of your healing process. By the six-month mark, the vast majority of  swelling should be resolved, and you’ll see the complete results of your mandibuloplasty.

If you’re considering a V-line mandibuloplasty, but you’re concerned that it will change your appearance in an unnatural way, schedule a consultation with Dr. Huynh. He will customize your procedure and show you exactly what to expect. He can also address any concerns or questions you have surrounding this procedure.

V-Line Jaw Surgery FAQs

A V-Line jaw surgery is often pursued by individuals who identify as women or non-binary and want to achieve a more traditionally feminine jaw and chin line. The procedure involves removing specific parts of the jawbone and chin to achieve a narrower, more pointed shape that resembles the letter “V.” It can add definition and contour to patients with a more rounded facial shape that desires a sleeker, more contoured profile.

Before your scheduled procedure, you’ll have an in-depth consultation with Dr. Huynh to discuss your expectations and desired results. He will begin by marking your face with a skin-safe marker to show exactly where he plans to contour your profile. During your surgery, you’ll be placed under general anesthesia. Dr. Huynh will begin by placing incisions along your jawline and chin and start to shave and sculpt your mandible bone to achieve your desired outcome.

Once Dr. Huynh is satisfied with the shape of your jaw, he’ll suture the incisions and dress the wound. You’ll be taken to a recovery room while you wake from anesthesia and undergo careful monitoring before sending you home with a trusted friend or family member.

During V-line jaw surgery, Dr. Huynh will focus on specific areas of your profile, including your jawbone and chin. He may also focus on the upper portion of your neck, as incisions in this location will grant him better access to sculpt your jawbone.

As with any surgical procedure, some risks and side effects can occur. Common side effects of V-Line Jaw surgery include:

  • Mild discomfort
  • Bruising and swelling
  • Headache and fatigue
  • Mild bleeding or drainage
  • Infection

Some uncommon side effects or risks include uneven healing or asymmetry of the jawline and nerve damage that causes numbness of the lips. To avoid these side effects, it’s essential to choose a qualified, experienced, and highly trained facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Huynh, who is well-versed in the intricacies of facial plastic surgery.

In the days before your procedure, avoid taking any blood-thinning medications for up to two weeks before your scheduled appointment. Blood-thinning medications include ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, and some supplements and vitamins. If it’s medically necessary for you to remain on blood-thinning medications, be sure to discuss this with your doctor. If you smoke, you’ll be required to quit six weeks before and after your procedure, as nicotine and tobacco can delay healing and increase the risks of developing an infection.

In the 48 hours before your surgery, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, eat well-balanced meals that encourage healthy digestion, and avoid drinking any alcoholic beverages. Be prepared for bed rest by making your space comfortable, having ready-to-prepare meals, and ensuring someone can assist you in the first few days after your surgery. You’ll also want to take a shower and wash your hair, as you may not be able to take a full shower for several days following your procedure.

The cost of your V-Line jaw surgery will be determined by several factors, including:

  • Anesthesia
  • Surgical room fees
  • Prescription drugs for recovery
  • Fees procured by your desires

The cost of living in and around your area can also determine the cost of your surgery as well as recovery time and if you need to stay in the hospital for any period. Dr. Huynh will do his best to discuss these fees with you beforehand and provide you with an accurate estimate for your procedure.
