FFS Forehead Contouring Surgery Atlanta, Georgia and NYC, New York

A male and female forehead have distinct differences that can greatly influence one’s gender perception for a transgender woman.  A male forehead tend to be longer hairline to brow distance and has thicker bony ridges over the bridge of the nose and above the eyes.  A woman’s bony eye socket are typically rounder in shape.

Forehead Bone Reduction is also known as Forehead Cranioplasty, may be done by several different techniques depending on the degree of severity of the bony prominence and the size of the adjacent frontal sinus cavity.  In most cases where the frontal sinus is absent or relative small in size, forehead bone contouring can simply be done by shaving the bone thickness down.  In more severe cases with enlarged frontal sinus and thin sinus walls, the outer bony wall of the sinus needs to be surgically removed, reshaped, and reconstructed in a new position to create a flatter forehead contour.  Thin titanium or resorbable fixation plates and screws may be used to immobilize the bone segments during the healing period.  Additionally, a voluming filler such as bone substitute or fat graft may also be used to help a smooth appearance.

Atlanta & NYC FFS Facial Surgeon Dr. Carson Huynh will determine which technique is best suited for you during your FFS consultation.

The Forehead Contouring Surgery Procedure

  • The access incision for forehead and brow bone contouring is placed a few centimeters behind the hairline from ear to ear.  In cases where hairline lowering is also performed at the same time, the access incision is place right at the hairline.
  • The forehead bone and upper eye socket bones are carefully exposed while preserving important structures such as nerves and blood vessels
  • The bones are then reshaped and reconstructed by any of the methods described above to achieve a smoother and feminine contour.
  • The bony orbital rims or socket bones may be reshaped by bone shaving
  • A concurrent hairline lowering advancement and brow lift can be performed at the same time with the same access incision
  • Suction drains may be place prior to closure of the incisions to facilitate drainage of blood and prevent a hematoma.  Drains are typically removed the next day.
