What Is Fat Grafting in Atlanta?
Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer or fat injection, is a procedure performed where a patient’s own natural fat is harvested, cleaned, and processed, and then re-injected to targeted areas of the face. Fat transfer of live fat cells can increase the volume of various areas on the face, such as brows, forehead, eyelids, cheeks, lips, and chin. Many areas on the face are excellent recipient sites for fat transfer due to their rich blood supply. Fat is usually harvested from the abdomen, hips, or thighs.
The procedure is a technique-sensitive process. Fat tissue must be harvested with a minimal amount of trauma to preserve the integrity of the fat cells. This will affect the viability of the transferred fat cells and, ultimately, the results of the procedure. Fat grafts take better in more highly vascularized areas such as the face.
The result of fat transfer is long-lasting compared to temporary synthetic dermal fillers and can be permanent. However, as you age and lose volume in your face, the fat grafting procedure may have to be repeated.
Indications for Treatment with Fat Grafting:
- Restore facial volume loss with aging
- Correct facial folds, laugh lines, and wrinkles
- Increase cheekbone size and contour
- Improve deep acne or traumatic scars
- Fill in facial defects from disease or injury.
- Be an alternative or adjunctive treatment to traditional facial rejuvenating surgery and injectable fillers.
How Fat Grafting Is Performed
The procedure for fat transfer is relatively simple and is performed in the office environment with local anesthesia or with IV sedation. Fat is harvested by liposuction from the abdomen, thigh, or buttock area after the area is infused with a diluted local anesthetic solution. The fat is then processed, treated, and injected into the various areas on the face using tiny blunt injection cannulas through several small skin punctures. Some of the fat is digested by the body, and several treatments may be necessary for the same area before the results are permanent.
Like most other facial procedures, swelling and bruising peaks around two or three days after the procedure, and the majority of the swelling has subsided by 10 to 14 days. Some residual swelling may persist for several months before final results are apparent. Postoperative discomfort is usually minimal and managed with light analgesics and anti-inflammatories for the first several days.
Benefits of Facial Fat Transfer
- Rejuvenated appearance and a renewed sense of self-confidence
- No risk of an allergic reaction, unlike collagen injections or application of hyaluronic acid.
- Results can be long-lasting
- It can be a stand-alone procedure or combined with other procedures such as a face lift for a comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation.
