Eyelid Surgery | Ptosis Correction

Eyelid Surgery | Ptosis Correction in Atlanta, GA

Ptosis is the term for sagging or droopy eyelids. Several issues can cause eyelid ptosis, including injury, muscle or nerve disorders, congenital defects, and even age.

Not only do drooping eyelids cause an aged or tired-looking appearance, but they can also impair a personโ€™s vision, making it difficult to do common tasks like drive, read, or other normal activities. Many patients will also complain of forehead or brow fatigue from continuously lifting their brows to see more clearly. The repetitive motion can cause forehead wrinkles, fine lines around the eyes, and even eyebrow ptosis where the skin below the brow begins to overhang over the eyelids and lashes, further blocking a patientโ€™s vision.

If youโ€™re experiencing eyelid ptosis, it is important to undergo an evaluation by a qualified physician who can evaluate and treat your ptosis in a way that will improve not only your appearance but also your vision and other underlying issues caused by the ptosis. Eyelid surgery is generally the best option to correct eyelid ptosis and should be performed by someone who is skilled and educated in treating areas as delicate as the eyes. Dr. C. Carson Huynh is an expert in all cosmetic eyelid surgeries and eyelid reconstructive surgeries, including ptosis. With over twenty years of surgical experience, he has developed techniques for eyelid surgery and ptosis correction that not only give his patients back their desired appearance but also their vision.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery or Ptosis Correction?

After eyelid ptosis surgery, patients can look forward to the many benefits it can offer. Dr. Huynh regularly performs eyelid surgery and ptosis correction surgery, and all his patients go on to enjoy the major improvement the surgery brings not only to their aesthetic but also to their daily life as well.ย

Whether you have a mild, moderate, or severe case of eyelid ptosis, after surgery you will experience significant improvements in your vision (both peripheral and other) due to the parts of your eyes that were covered by upper eyelid drooping are now free. In addition, you will also see an improvement of symmetry of your eyelid height and contour, restoring a normal anatomical appearance of your eyelids. Lastly, you will look more awake, refreshed, and years younger, which can greatly impact your self-esteem.

How Is Ptosis Repair Performed?

There are several types of ptosis repair, depending on the cause of your ptosis, age, and the severity of your case. Dr. Huynh will discuss with you what the optimal approach will be to achieve the results you desire. In adults, most ptosis repair cases are minimally invasive and can typically be performed at our office or out-patient surgery center under light sedation or local anesthesia. Due to Dr. Huynhโ€™s technique, there will either be no visible scar or a thin scar well-concealed within the natural eyelid crease. For children, ptosis usually forms due to poorly developed muscles, resulting in severe ptosis and risk to visual development.

Ptosis surgery can take about one to two hours to complete. During surgery, the muscle that lifts the eyelid is shortened, and sometimes redundant skin is removed. Once Dr. Huynh is content with how the surgery or correction has gone, he will insert sutures and youโ€™ll be sent to recovery.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Eyelid Ptosis Surgery?

Generally, the best candidates for eyelid ptosis surgery are those who are experiencing problems with heavy skin, fat, or muscle from their upper eyelids. Eyelid ptosis surgery treats people who have drooping upper eyelids from poor muscle tone or damage to the nerve. This can result in the eyelid losing its ability to hold its structure, drooping heavily and blocking vision. Some patients are born with this condition while others develop it later in life due to aging, trauma, or neurological issues.

During your consultation, Dr. Huynh will examine your upper eyelids as well as your eyebrows to thoroughly pinpoint the issue so that he can assess which surgical method is the best for your correction.

What to Expect After Eyelid Surgery | Ptosis Correction?

Eyelid surgery for either cosmetic purposes or ptosis correction is an outpatient procedure, but you should not drive yourself the day of your surgery. Ask a trusted friend or caregiver to drive you to and from the hospital after your surgery. A typical recovery for ptosis surgery includes ice packs, antibiotic eye ointment for the sutures and minimal pain medication. The eyes may feel dry at first as the eye is more open afterwards. Lubricating drops are encouraged to help moisten the eyes until theyโ€™re used to be more exposed. Eyelid swelling and bruising is normal for the first few weeks after surgery. Dr. Huynh will encourage you to keep all activity light as you heal and recover.

Hereโ€™s what you can expect in the weeks and months after ptosis surgery:

  • Most patients can return to normal activity levels after the first few days
  • Minimal bruising, swelling, and discomfort can last up to a week
  • Residual bruising may last up to 3 weeks
  • Results can be seen after the eyelid has had time to settle, up to three months, and scars should be well-concealed in the natural crease of the eye
