What Is Double Eyelid Surgery in Atlanta?
Asian double eyelid surgery, also known as Asian blepharoplasty, is the most popular cosmetic procedure performed in Asian plastic surgery. This procedure is designed to create or enhance a crease in the upper eyelid resulting in eyes that appear brighter and rounder. Having double eyelids also adds more versatility for many women when applying eye shadow and makeup.
The upper eyelid crease is absent in approximately fifty percent of all Asians and is more often found in Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese. The reason is due to the lack of fibrous connections from the deep layers of the eyelid (levator aponeurosis and tarsal plate) to the underside of the eyelid skin (dermis). When present, the natural Asian eyelid crease is also significantly different from Caucasians in terms of height, depth, and shape. Therefore, aesthetic goals in Asian eyelid surgery are measured by a different set of standards. Dr. Huynh is a facial plastic surgery specialist who understands these differences and can help you achieve a more natural open-eyed look while preserving your ethnicity.
Dr. Huynh will discuss with you how your face can look and what you can expect from surgery. Our objective is to create a natural appearance that is pleasing to you. Before and after photographs and examples of various sizes and shapes of upper eyelid creases will be shown to you during your consultation. In selected patients, a medial epicanthoplasty procedure may also be indicated to create a more cosmetically pleasing fold and a wider eye appearance by opening up the excess tissue covering the inner corners of the eyes called epicanthal folds. Dr. Huynh will also provide a simulation of what your eyes will look like with the double eyelid folds in front of a mirror to help you visualize the after results.
Many patients find this technique to be beneficial.
Asian double eyelid blepharoplasty takes about one hour of “hands-on” time. Allowing for preoperative sedation and recovery, the average patient spends just over two hours in our office.
Local anesthesia, along with oral or light conscious IV sedation, is used.
Recovery: What to Expect
How long is the initial recovery?
Swelling usually peaks on the morning after surgery. Bruising reaches its peak on the second day after surgery and is usually mild. Sutures are removed on the fourth or fifth day. Non-strenuous activity may be undertaken beginning the day after surgery, while more vigorous exercise should be delayed for about ten days. Most bruising is gone by a week, while noticeable swelling may persist for several weeks.
How long does it take until all healing is complete?
Although one can resume normal daily activities after two weeks, it may take several months before the final results can be appreciated.

The DST Method
DST (the non-incisional technique) has the best results for patients with little excess skin around their eyes and little to no fat in the eyelids. With DST, a suture is used to “hold together” tissues of the eyelid below the skin to form a new crease. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia.
Another upside to the DST Technique, during the consultation, you can let the doctor know if you want your crease high, medium, or low. You can also adjust the crease higher and lower if need be after the procedure is completed. The quick and simple procedure is performed under local anesthesia in less than an hour right in our Atlanta office.
Benefits of the DST method:
• Less downtime (since no wound/cut was created)
• No scarring
• Easily reversible
