Asian Eyelid Surgery

Asian Eyelid Surgery in Atlanta, GA

Asian eyelid surgery, also known as Asian Blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to create a crease in the upper eyelid to meet patientsโ€™ cosmetic preference and improve clarity in patientโ€™s vision. Over 50% of the Asian population are born with eyelids that have either a partial pretrial crease or no crease at all.

To understand what this crease is, itโ€™s the line that goes across the middle of the eyelid. The type of eyelid without this crease is often called a monolid, and while it doesnโ€™t always create cosmetic or functional issues, it can in some cases lead to painful eye irritations from ingrown lashes or obstructed vision, particularly in older people.ย

With Asian eyelid surgery in Atlanta, GA, experienced, prestigious, and nationally recognized expert in facial plastic surgery, Dr. C. Carson Huynh understands and respects the importance of maintaining oneโ€™s cultural identity while still being able to achieve better functionality or aesthetics among facial features. With a humble immigrant backstory and 20 years of surgical experience, Dr. Huynh has developed techniques for eyelid surgery that will help to fit and meet the unique needs of each of his patients.

What Is Asian Eyelid Surgery?

Asian eyelid surgery is among the most popular cosmetic procedures in the Asian community because of its ability to help improve the aesthetics and functionality of the eyes. It is a procedure designed to create or enhance a crease in the upper eyelid to make the eyes appear brighter and rounder.

The upper eyelid crease is a trait that is absent in approximately 50% of all Asians and is most often a characteristic of Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese people. The reason is due to the lack of fibrous connections in the deep layers of the eyelids to the underside of the eyelid skin. When this crease is present, the natural Asian eyelid crease is significantly different from a Caucasianโ€™s eyelid in terms of height, depth, and shape. Therefore, aesthetic goals in Asian eyelid surgery are measured by a different set of standards. As a specialist in the field of facial plastic surgery, Dr. Huynh understands these standards and can help you achieve a more natural, open-eyed look while always respecting your ethnicity.

What Are Some Unique Benefits of Asian Eyelid Surgery?

Some of the key benefits of Asian eyelid surgery include:

A majority of patients who have undergone Asian eyelid surgery notice an improvement in asymmetries for a more attractive eye line. The eyes appear more open, awake, and natural with a slight crease at the corner of the eyes.

Monolids can appear puffy and partially closed, giving the face a drowsy or tired expression. Some patients complain that these so-called โ€œsleepy eyesโ€ make them look like theyโ€™re tired, even if theyโ€™re well-rested, or that they appear bored or stressed when theyโ€™re not. By surgically creating a crease, Asian eyelid surgery can open up the eyes and give the face a more awake and rejuvenated appearance.

For many patients, undergoing blepharoplasty surgery is a matter of aesthetic preference, but for others, it carries many functional benefits. Monolid eyelids can prevent the eyes from opening fully and limit peripheral vision. During an Asian blepharoplasty, the upper lid is lifted to expand the line of sight. Patients often find that this leads to comfort in their forehead, since they no longer have to raise their eyelids in order to see more clearly.

What to Expect from Your Asian Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Huynh uses the DST or Double Suture Method because of its amazing results for patients with little excess skin around their eyes and little to no fat in the eyelids, which is often the case in Asian eyelid surgery patients. With DST, a suture is used to hold the tissues of the eyelid together to form a new crease. Although it is sometimes referred to as the โ€œnon-incisionโ€ method, it does involve several millimeter incisions to bury the sutures beneath the skin. No skin will be removed during this procedure.ย

An added benefit of the DST technique is that during your consultation, you can tell Dr. Huynh if you want your crease higher or lower on your eyelid.ย This quick and simple procedure is performed under local anesthesia in less than an hour at Dr. Huynhโ€™s accredited Atlanta office.

What to Expect During Recovery

The discomfort associated with Asian eyelid surgery is mild and can easily be managed with pain medication or medicated eye ointment provided by Dr. Huynh. Because the tissues around the eyes are extra sensitive, itโ€™s normal to experience a degree of swelling and bruising for at least two weeks after having this procedure.ย

During the first week after your procedures, you may experience some ocular dryness and blurry vision. If this occurs, donโ€™t worry, your vision hasnโ€™t been damaged and will return to normal after a few weeks as your eyelids heal.

Your eyes may be sensitive to sunlight and bright lights while you heal, so make sure that you wear protective sunglasses when you go outside. You should also protect your incisions from UV rays while theyโ€™re still fresh and pink as the sun can cause scars to darken.
