What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgery used to reshape the physical appearance of the nose. Patients often ask for a rhinoplasty procedure in order to make the nose smaller, reform the tip or to correct any indentations, bumps or angles.
How is a Rhinoplasty Procedure Performed?
First, a local anesthesia and IV sedation is applied to the patient to provide comfort during the surgery. The doctor then makes incisions inside the nose in order to get inside to the bone and cartilage. These incisions leave no visible damage as they are made inside the nose. In order to change the shape of the nose, the doctor may remove parts of the bone or cartilage, add in skin tissue or insert implants. Once the desired shape has been created, the doctor will reform the skin back around the nose. The nose will then be put in a splint that will support the new shape until it is completely healed, which can take up to two weeks.
There is the possibility of some physical pain, bruising or puffiness. The doctor may prescribe some pain medicine. Cold application to the swollen areas can also help with the puffiness. It may take up to two weeks for all of the bruising and puffiness to completely subside. The patient will also have to keep the head elevated and under low stress for up to two months.
